“your character narrowly avoids falling from the moving staircases.”

Ronny Smethley was perhaps the paragon of grace, wit, and charm — or at least, she hoped she was. She was currently wearing her favorite pair of blue suede pumps, at no easy height of four inches, walking down the staircase, and waving to a classmate from several staircases away, when her own started to swing to the left without warning. Caught unawares, her sense of balance was violently shaken. She attempted to grab hold of the railing, but — damn these heels — her reach wasn’t quite far enough, and she was beginning to curse the thought of ever waking up this morning at all.

Luckily for her, another student was jogging down the same steps right behind her when the staircase started to move. A boy, blonde, and Ronny had seen him around before, but couldn’t quite form a name on her lips. He immediately went to help her when he saw her fall, and while she was embarrassed beyond all reason, she supposed she should at least count herself lucky that she wouldn’t wake up in the Hospital Wing in three days with a concussion and several broken bones.

“Whoa,” he said, catching her in his arms. “Are you okay?”

She smiled up at him. “I am now.”
